LED LIGHTING UPGRADES

Still Using Old Downlights From The Late 90s - 2000s? They Could Be Costing You More Than You Think.

Many Churton Park homes built in the late 1990s and 2000s still have older halogen or incandescent downlights. These can use up to seven times more power than modern LED lighting.

A home with 40 older downlights running for around three hours a day could save over $80 per month by upgrading to LED.

Why upgrade to LED?

Many Wellington homes built from the late 1990s through the 2000s were fitted with halogen or incandescent downlights. They were standard at the time, but they can use up to seven times more power than modern LED lighting.

If your home has 30 or 40 downlights running each evening, that extra power use adds up quickly. In a typical home with 40 downlights running for around three hours a day, upgrading to LED can save more than $80 per month in lighting costs.

On To It Electrical can replace your old fittings with modern LED downlights, often in a single visit, reducing your power use, cutting down on bulb replacements, and giving you cleaner, more consistent lighting throughout your home.

The Benefits of LED Lighting

Cut Your Lighting Power Use by Up to 85%

LEDs use far less power than old downlights, helping reduce your power bill every month without changing the way you live.

Warmer, Safer Homes

Older downlights require gaps in your insulation, letting heat escape into the ceiling. Modern LEDs can be safely covered, helping keep your home warmer and your heating costs down.

Lighting That Lasts Up to 25x Longer

LED downlights can last up to 50,000 hours, meaning far fewer replacements and no more climbing up to change blown bulbs.

We're often asked

How long does a typical LED upgrade take?

Most homes can be completed within the same day. For an average house with 30–40 downlights, the work is usually finished in a single visit.

No. The existing fittings are removed and the new LED downlights are installed using the same openings. There’s no patching required.

Not necessarily. Many homeowners choose to replace all of them at once for consistency and maximum power savings, but we can also upgrade selected rooms if you prefer.

Older incandescent downlights often use around 75 watts per fitting. Modern LED downlights typically use around 10 watts. If your home has 30–40 lights running each evening, that difference can add up to around $70–100 in monthly lighting power savings.

LED lighting tends to give a cleaner, more consistent light than older fittings. We can also help choose the right colour temperature and brightness for your space so it feels comfortable throughout the home.

Do LED lights last longer than halogen or incandescent?

Yes. Older bulbs often last around 2,000 hours, while modern LED fittings can last 50,000 hours or more, meaning far fewer replacements.

Yes. Older halogen and incandescent downlights produced a lot of heat. Previous regulations often required around 200 mm of clearance around the fitting, meaning insulation had to be kept well away to reduce fire risk. These gaps allowed heat from your home to escape into the ceiling space. Modern LED downlights run much cooler and can often be safely covered with insulation, helping keep warmth inside your home.

This can also help reduce heating costs, while keeping your home and family warmer.

Yes. The old halogen or incandescent fittings are removed and taken away as part of the installation.
